What is Isabgol?
Isabgol is also known as Psyllium husk. It is derived from the seeds of the plant Plantago ovata, which contains around 70% soluble fiber and 30% insoluble fiber. It is an herb that is native to Asia, the Mediterranean region and North Africa.
Packed with both soluble and insoluble fibres, Isabgol helps in regularizing bowel movement by clearing the passage for the movement of food through the intestines in your stomach. Isabgol is a good remedy that has been used as a laxative since ages to relieve constipation. The insoluble fiber present in Isabgol causes the stool to soften and expand, thereby improving gut movement.
The fibers in Isabgol also help in hardening the stools that works well when you suffer from diarrhea. Though it seems counterproductive to consume fibers while experiencing diarrhea, Isabgol absorbs water and passes through your digestive system, binding waste matter and allowing stools to be formed.
The hygroscopic properties of Isabgol are also useful in reducing cholesterol from blood. Here, it forms a thin layer in the intestines that prevents the absorption of cholesterol from food and therefore efficiently helps in lowering cholesterol.
What are probiotics?
The use of probiotics supports and improves the body’s gut system. These probiotics are microorganisms that nurture healthy bacteria in a person’s digestive tract and simultaneously control germs and other unhealthy bacteria.
Probiotics are not only preventive measures for conditions such as IBD and IBS, but also facilitators for better gut and vaginal flora. They help maintain immunity and create a healthy biome in the body. Moreover, probiotics can be a great complement to fitness routines. Regularly following a strenuous training routine suppress your immune system and make your body more susceptible to infections – something that can be offset with incorporating probiotics into your diet.
The Power of Two
Both these products are good for your body. Functionally, they serve two different purposes. But what happens when you consistently consume them together?
It seems the answer is that two positives really only generate a much, much bigger number. Expert Peter Jackson, in a ground-breaking study, showed that psyllium husk is related to creating a friendly environment for good bacteria from probiotics. He describes Isabgol as “the key turning point in stabilizing an otherwise ‘uncontrollable’ condition”.
His study suggested that certain remedies, especially probiotics, reach their peak efficacy when paired with Isabgol. This is particularly true in the case of inflammatory bowel diseases like irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohns.
How? Well, the addition of Isabgol actually maintains the positive bacteria provided by the probiotic. The bacteria needs fiber to feed on within the gut to ensure its long-term survival. Without the fiber provided by Isabgol, the bacteria will die out before it can even begin purifying the gut biome. More importantly, it nurtures a diverse range of positive bacteria that are not only necessary in alleviating digestive problems, but also helps in reducing weight.
